CHVRCHES have released "Overthinker," the second single from their upcoming album All The King's Men, due January 22, 2027, via Futures on LP, CD, cassette, and digital formats. The single arrived the morning after a 100-person charity show at Assumption Studios in Glasgow, the converted church where the band recorded the album.

"Overthinker" is track four on the 11-song record. Lauren Mayberry described the song as being about a relationship with "someone who is your shelter and your storm," and the difficulty of living in the "winter" of someone's depression or discontent. The lyrics include the lines: "Should I lie to you, keep my thoughts from you? You ask after my friends, if I'm getting thinner, not sure how you raised such a chronic overthinker." According to the press release, the single is BBC Radio 1's Hottest Record.

What Is On CHVRCHES' Album All The King's Men

All The King's Men is the fifth studio album from CHVRCHES, the trio of Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook, and Martin Doherty, and their first in nearly six years. Their previous album, Screen Violence (2021), reached the top 10 in the UK. The band toured that record through 2023, then took a deliberate break before reconvening in Glasgow for a series of intense three-week recording sessions at Assumption Studios.

The full tracklist for All The King's Men is:

1. Roses 2. Evil 3. Adore You 4. Overthinker 5. Royal Blue 6. Comedown Tomorrow 7. Friend Of A Friend 8. Three Out Of Five 9. Conman 10. Jamie's Prayer 11. Faith In Flying

The lead single, "Roses," was released the month prior to "Overthinker." The press release describes it as social commentary on contemporary Britain, with Mayberry singing: "raise a glass to delusions of the good days of blood and wine; of pearls for swine."

During the break, all three members shifted their creative reference points. Doherty reconnected with British cinema directors Shane Meadows and Ken Loach and artists including Massive Attack, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and PJ Harvey. Cook, still based in Scotland, moved away from electronics toward acoustic writing and listened to Nick Drake, Bert Jansch, and the Incredible String Band. Mayberry spent the period doing songwriting sessions and developing as a lyricist.

The album is available for pre-order and pre-save now at their official site, chvrch.es.

What Independent Artists Can Take From This Campaign

The rollout here is worth studying regardless of your budget. CHVRCHES dropped the lead single one month before the second, gave the second single a physical anchor point (the charity show at the recording studio), and are letting the venue progression from Screen Violence era tell the continuity story on its own. The album narrative also has a clear creative angle, the band explaining what each member was absorbing during the hiatus rather than just saying they "grew."

If you are building toward a release, consider whether your rollout has a physical moment that gives media something to photograph and fans something to feel like insiders about. A living room show, a pop-up, or even a listening session can anchor a single the way Assumption Studios anchored this one.
