L.O.L. Surprise! set up an activation at Lollapalooza this past weekend, moving the brand out of retail and into a live festival environment.
The footprint included a large-scale "Surprise Wall" built around the brand's unboxing concept, where hidden compartments dispensed collectible prizes and VIP upgrades. There was also a Kandi Bar offering collectible bracelets and music tied to the brand's Music Festival Dolls, a photo stage built around a larger-than-life Jennie doll, and a digital layer inside Festiverse, Lollapalooza's official app, where attendees could unlock hourly rewards including festival credit and passes.
Running alongside the activation is a new series, "L.O.L. Surprise! The Next Headliner," which debuted August 1 on the L.O.L. Surprise! YouTube channel. The 8-episode series stars Giselle Torres, Indi Star, Journey Montana Binns, Kate Mina Lin, and Olivia Taylor Cohen.
The series is produced in partnership with London Alley, a VICE Media company. Corinne Marshall, creator of K.C. Undercover, serves as writer and showrunner. Chell Stephen, known for work on Riverdale and Nurses, directs. Each episode features original music composed by Demitri Lerios and performed by the cast. According to the release, a full soundtrack album is set for release alongside the season finale.
For independent artists, the production structure here is worth noting. A brand-funded YouTube series with original music, a named composer, a cast that performs, and a soundtrack tied to a release window is a real creative pipeline. That kind of project does not require a label or a major platform deal to get off the ground.
Photos from the activation, credited to photographer SkyQuajus Turner, are available via the Falkowitz PR press kit.
