Jawdropped, the Los Angeles four-piece of vocalists/guitarists Kyra Morling and Roman Zangari, bassist Sean Edwards, and drummer Cook Lee-Chobanian, will release their debut album Secret To Spare on September 18 via Transgressive/Canvasback.
The ten-track record follows the band's Just Fantasy EP from last year. According to the band, they formed roughly two years ago after Zangari and Morling played a house show together with songs Zangari had been sitting on. Edwards and Lee-Chobanian came aboard shortly after.
The album was self-produced by the band, recorded live across spare days and weekends throughout 2025 while the group balanced touring and day jobs. Colin Knight (Agriculture) handled engineering, and Alex Farrar, known for his work with MJ Lenderman and Waxahatchee, mixed the record.
"We wanted it to sound like a band in a room, so we recorded live and tried not to water down what we do," Zangari says. "We wanted to capture the essence of how we play live, the unfiltered Jawdropped sound."
Two singles are out now with videos: "Monday" and "Split Lip." Zangari describes "Split Lip" as being about the tension between striving for momentum in a band and facing the uncertainty that comes with it. "We're still broke, there's no guarantee that any of this is going to lead to anything," he says.
Edwards sums up the band's songwriting approach directly: "Songwriting is the ticket for us. If it doesn't work on an acoustic guitar with just Kyra and Roman singing, it doesn't work at all. We try to shed any pretension and mysteriousness in favor of to-the-point sincerity."
For independent artists, the band's trajectory is worth noting. They went from a house show to signing with Transgressive and booking European festival dates in about two years, largely by staying active locally, self-producing, and keeping the music functional at its core.
The band heads out on tour in late September, with US dates and a European run that includes Left of the Dial Festival in Rotterdam, Paradiso in Amsterdam, and Pitchfork Paris. Two early dates are with This Is Lorelei.
Tour Dates:, 09/22 Columbus, OH @ Ace of Cups (with This Is Lorelei), 09/23 Indianapolis, IN @ Turntable (with This Is Lorelei), 10/02 Los Angeles, CA @ The Echo, 10/08 New York, NY @ Night Club 101, 10/22 Rotterdam, NL @ Left of the Dial Festival, 10/23 Rotterdam, NL @ Left of the Dial Festival, 10/25 Berlin, DE @ Urban Spree, 10/27 Amsterdam, NL @ Paradiso, 10/28 Gent, BE @ Ringo, 10/30 Sheffield, UK @ Alder, 11/02 London, UK @ Pitchfork London, 11/03 Southampton, UK @ Joiners, 11/04 Bristol, UK @ Rough Trade, 11/06 Nantes, FR @ Catapult Festival, 11/07 Paris, FR @ Pitchfork Paris
