Mark Pellington Brings Free 'This Is Buzz: Analog + Ecstasy' Event to LA This Saturday

Director Mark Pellington is staging a free, all-day event at Beyond the Streets Gallery (434 N. La Brea Ave., Los Angeles) this Saturday, July 25th from 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

The event, titled "This Is Buzz: Analog + Ecstasy," centers on This Is Buzz, Pellington's documentary about the making of Buzz, an MTV current affairs series that aired in 1990. The day includes screenings of two original Buzz episodes that have not been publicly shown since their initial broadcast 36 years ago, a live panel conversation, vendor pop-ups, and the multi-screen premiere of the documentary itself.

Schedule highlights:, All day: Matt Pinfield, longtime host of MTV's 120 Minutes, on-site, All day: JR.Market pop-up shop featuring restored cassette players, Walkmans, boom boxes, and related analog gear, 1:00 p.m.: Lightfield Lewis presents personal and pop culture video work on nostalgia and memory, 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.: Screenings of two lost Buzz episodes, including Episode 1 (*The Future*, featuring Dennis Hopper, Malcolm McLaren, and William Burroughs) and Episode 3 (*Cultural Stereotypes*), 3:00 p.m.: Hank Corwin, Academy Award-nominated editor of JFK, The Big Short, and Natural Born Killers, in conversation with Pellington about editorial craft, collage, and the visual language of Buzz, 7:00 p.m.: Multi-screen premiere of This Is Buzz followed by a Q&A

The documentary is written and directed by Pellington and produced by Eb George and Liza Hughes. The film is a Prolific Films and Kiln Pictures production. Indie distributor Antenna Releasing is set to launch a nationwide roadshow in September, with Pellington and to-be-announced guests appearing for Q&As at tour stops. A digital release is planned for later in the fall, according to the release.

Pellington is known for directing music videos for Pearl Jam, U2, Nine Inch Nails, and Imagine Dragons, as well as feature films including The Mothman Prophecies and Arlington Road.

For independent artists, the panel with Corwin and Pellington on the craft of collage and editorial storytelling alone is worth the trip. The event is free and open to the public.
