The 2026 Met Gala went ahead Monday night at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, drawing a long list of musicians alongside the usual fashion and film crowd. This year's theme, "Fashion Is Art," asked attendees to treat the body as a canvas — a concept that landed in the context of the Costume Institute's new "Costume Art" exhibition, which pairs historic garments with works from the Met's permanent collection.

The Bezos Controversy
Not everything was celebratory. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his wife Lauren Sánchez Bezos were named honorary chairs, a move that drew vocal criticism from attendees and the public. Some called for a boycott outright. New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani declined his invitation, citing a focus on affordability — a pointed contrast to an event where tables reportedly run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The new "Costume Art" exhibition will open in the Met's freshly built 12,000-square-foot Condé M. Nast Galleries, which signals how tightly the museum's fashion programming is now tied to media and corporate sponsorship.
For independent artists, the Met Gala is a useful reminder that visual identity is part of the job — how you present your image, who you align with, and what your aesthetic communicates all carry real weight in how your work is received.
