New Radicals Release First New Song in 28 Years for Romcom Soundtrack

New Radicals are back with new music. Gregg Alexander and Danielle Brisebois, the band's two permanent members, quietly dropped "One Night Only (Break Loose Break Free!)" on Friday, making it the first newly recorded song released under the New Radicals name since their 1998 debut album, Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too.

The track serves as the theme song for One Night Only, an upcoming romcom starring Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner. The film's premise: premarital sex is legal for exactly one night per year. The song fits that energy. Piano-driven pop-rock with spoken-word flourishes, it lands in familiar New Radicals territory without trying too hard to resurrect something that never really left the cultural conversation.

Alexander co-wrote the song with Brisebois and her husband Nick Lashley, the same team responsible for "Lost Stars," the Oscar-nominated track recorded by Keira Knightley and Adam Levine for the 2013 film Begin Again. Alexander has spent the years since New Radicals' 1999 breakup as one of pop's more quietly prolific behind-the-scenes figures, co-writing Sophie Ellis-Bextor's "Murder On The Dancefloor" and Santana and Michelle Branch's "The Game Of Love."

What the New Radicals Comeback Means for the One Night Only Soundtrack

The New Radicals song is only part of the story here. King Princess and Este Haim are both in the film's cast, and both contributed to the soundtrack in ways that go beyond acting credits.

King Princess covered John Paul Young's 1977 classic "Love Is In The Air" for the project. Este Haim, reuniting with her Suncoast collaborator Christopher Stracey, composed the film's score. A medley of that work, titled "One Haim Only Plus A Stray (Score Suite)," is streaming now alongside the New Radicals and King Princess contributions.

This is the kind of soundtrack assembly that should get attention. Three distinct creative voices, all bringing real artistic credibility, built around a quirky commercial film. That combination does not always come together this cleanly.

For context on why New Radicals still matter: "You Get What You Give" was President Biden's late son Beau Biden's theme song during his cancer battle, a detail Biden included in his memoir. The band reunited in 2021 to perform at Biden's virtual inauguration parade. In the years since, artists like Geese, Benee, and Gus Dapperton have covered the song, keeping it alive for a generation that wasn't there the first time.

Alexander has also released his own versions of "Murder On The Dancefloor" in 2024 and "The Game Of Love" just last month, suggesting this isn't a one-off nostalgia grab. There is a pattern of deliberate re-emergence here, and "One Night Only" is the first original creative output to come out of it.
