Sara Bareilles Releases 'Still Crying,' Announces Album Good Grief Due August 28

Sara Bareilles released a new single, 'Still Crying,' on July 31, along with a music video directed by Kimmy Gatewood. The track is co-written with Aaron Dessner and is the second single from her upcoming album Good Grief, due August 28 on Epic Records.

Bareilles described the emotional core of the song in a statement included in the release: 'I was trying to wrap my arms around the redundancy and the stuckness of that feeling of, "How am I here again? Why am I still crying? I'm still in the same loop."'

Gatewood, who directed the third season of Girls5eva, also directed the video. Bareilles appears in it alongside Girls5eva co-star John Lutz and other friends.

Good Grief is Bareilles' seventh studio album and her first since 2019's Amidst the Chaos. The 14-track record was self-produced and recorded primarily over six days at Dreamland Recording Studios in Woodstock, NY, with co-producer Aaron Dessner contributing through sessions at his Long Pond Studios in the Hudson Valley. The album features contributions from Brandi Carlile, Ingrid Michaelson, Andrea Gibson, Joe Tippett and Megan Falley.

A documentary about the making of the album, Sara Bareilles: Good Grief, directed by Josh Alexander and produced by Daniel J. Chalfen, had its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival in June.

The first single, 'Home,' was released in June and was inspired by a conversation between Stephen Colbert and Anderson Cooper about grief and loss.

Bareilles will tour North America this fall in support of the album. The Good Grief Tour, promoted by Live Nation, runs from September 9 through October 20, with multiple-night stops in Boston, Washington D.C., Toronto, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco, among other cities. The October 12 to 14 Los Angeles run lands at the Dolby Theatre.

For independent artists, the production approach here is worth noting: Bareilles tracked the bulk of a 14-song album in six days with a core band of longtime collaborators, a reminder that speed and trust in the room can be as valuable as an unlimited studio budget.
