Shadow Child Releases 'DNA' EP on London Records

UK DJ and producer Shadow Child has released his new EP DNA on London Records. The five-track project is out now and features collaborations with Guinean vocalist Falle Nioke and Manchester electronic trio Delphic.

The tracklist runs: "Falle Acid" (ft. Falle Nioke), "Holding Back" (ft. Delphic), "Fifty One," "Song For Sophia," and "Holding Back (again)." Both "Falle Acid" and "Holding Back" have accompanying live performance videos shot at London nightclub fabric. The video for "Falle Acid" is available now; the "Holding Back" video is coming soon.

Falle Nioke has previously worked with Joe Goddard, Ghost Culture, Barry Can't Swim, and Sir Was. The Delphic collaboration carries personal weight for Shadow Child, according to the release, reflecting his own family roots in Manchester.

Speaking on the EP, Shadow Child says: "The DNA EP in part draws from my connection with Manchester, bringing together acid house, rave and much more. The EP is the precursor to a wider body of work coming in the following months and provides club tracks with instrumental excursions that I'm so happy with."

On the creative direction behind the project, he adds: "I came out of the pandemic questioning my place in the dance music world and where I wanted to go next. I was inspired by the lo-fi explosion of artists a few years back like Mall Grab and DJ Seinfeld and it made me go back to my roots, exploring the raw, stripped back sound of the jungle and rave tunes I grew up with."

According to the release, DNA has received early support from BBC Radio 6 Music, BBC Radio 1, Point Blank FM, and Rinse FM.

Shadow Child, born Dave Spoon, has been releasing music since the early 2000s. He signed to London Records for this project, joining a roster that according to the release also includes Alewya, Joalin, Orbital, and Goldie. Artwork for the EP was created by British graphic artist and video director Jimmy Turrell, whose credits include work with Beck, The Chemical Brothers, and Kasabian.

The release notes that a debut solo album is in progress. For independent artists thinking about catalog and evolution, Shadow Child's willingness to shelve an established alias and rebuild under a new name while staying rooted in a specific sound is worth paying attention to.
