The unveiling happened Saturday evening at the fifth annual Legacy of Love Gala, hosted by The Whitney E. Houston Legacy Foundation and Primary Wave Music in Atlanta. The timing was intentional: the gala falls right around Houston's August 9 birthday, and this year she would have turned 63.

The doll's look pulls directly from the music video for "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)," the 1987 pop anthem that still gets played everywhere. Pat Houston, president of the foundation and executor of Houston's estate, co-hosted the gala and framed the release as something bigger than a collectible. "May this doll remind every child and every collector that dreams have no limits," she said at the event.
