Linda Perry is set to receive the special international songwriter prize at the 71st Ivor Novello Awards, held in London on May 21. The recognition covers her full body of work, from fronting 4 Non Blondes to becoming one of the most sought-after songwriters in modern pop history.
Perry wrote or co-wrote some of the most recognizable songs of the early 2000s. Her credits include Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful," P!nk's "Get the Party Started," and Gwen Stefani's "What You Waiting For?" She has also worked with Adele, Ariana Grande, Celine Dion, Alicia Keys, Brandi Carlile, and Dolly Parton, among others. Three of her five Grammy nominations have come in songwriting categories, including two nods for song of the year.
"It's an honor to be recognized for my songwriting contributions at the 71st Ivor Novello Awards," Perry said in a statement. "So many incredible artists have been celebrated, and I am humbled to be standing alongside them."
The Ivors Academy CEO Roberto Neri called Perry's work a continuing force in global popular culture. The prize is voted on entirely by fellow songwriters and composers, which makes it one of the more meaningful honors in the craft.
What the Ivor Novello Award Means for Songwriters
The Ivor Novello Awards are specifically for songwriters and composers, not performers. That distinction matters. In an industry that still tends to spotlight the face on the cover over the person who built the song, the Ivors are one of the few major ceremonies that center the craft itself.
Perry joins a short list of international recipients. Brandon Flowers of The Killers received the prize most recently, with Bruce Springsteen presenting the award. The ceremony also this year honors Rosalía with the international songwriter of the year prize for her 2025 album LUX, a project recorded in 13 languages.
For independent artists and songwriters building their careers right now, Perry's catalog is a case study worth studying. She did not come up through the traditional industry pipeline. She broke through with 4 Non Blondes in the early 90s, then rebuilt her lane entirely as a behind-the-scenes writer and producer. The catalog she built across two decades speaks louder than any single moment.
The lesson here is simple: the song outlasts the cycle. Perry's work from the early 2000s is still being recognized, streamed, and covered today. That kind of longevity comes from writing with intention, not just chasing what's trending.
If you are an independent artist working on your craft and want to get your music in front of people who care about it, submit your work and let us know what you're building. The craft always wins in the long run.
