Merlin and Spotify Sign AI Remixing Licensing Agreement for Indie Artists
Spotify's AI remix tool now covers 30,000 indie labels through a new Merlin licensing deal.

Merlin and Spotify have signed a licensing agreement that opens up Spotify's AI remixing tool to the independent music community. The deal, announced August 4, means artists on labels represented by Merlin can now opt into Spotify's remix feature, with the ability to earn additional streaming revenue when subscribers use their music.
Spotify first unveiled its AI remixing capabilities back in May, with Universal Music Group as the first major partner. The Merlin agreement extends that model to roughly 30,000 labels in Merlin's network, according to Spotify co-CEO Alex Norström, who confirmed the deal on the company's earnings call today.
Participation is opt-in. Artists on Merlin member labels choose whether to make their catalog available for remixing. Spotify's stated framework for the tool centers on three principles: consent, credit, and compensation. Every remix is designed to drive listeners back to the original recording, and the feature itself will be available as a paid add-on for Spotify premium subscribers.
What the Merlin and Spotify AI Deal Means for Independent Artists
This is a meaningful moment for indie artists navigating the AI conversation. The opt-in structure and explicit compensation framework are what separates this deal from the more chaotic ways AI has been used against artists without permission or payment. Merlin CEO Charlie Lexton called Spotify's approach to artist rights "exemplary" in a statement, which is not language label representatives throw around casually.
The broader context matters here. Last October, Merlin was part of a five-group coalition alongside UMG, Warner, Sony, and Believe that partnered with Spotify to develop artist-first AI products. This new agreement is a direct result of that groundwork. The industry is also moving toward standardized labeling for AI-generated versus AI-assisted music, though no formal system has been adopted yet.
For independent creators who have been watching the AI music debate from the sidelines, this deal represents one of the cleaner frameworks that has emerged so far. The model is built around the artist keeping control, which is not a given in this space.
