To be clear about what was actually on the table: Tesfaye was never talking about walking away from music entirely. The conversation was specifically about retiring the Weeknd persona, the one he has been building since 2011. In a 2024 Variety interview tied to the Hurry Up Tomorrow album rollout, he described the name as something that had been fully mastered. His words at the time were almost graceful about it: "No one's gonna do the Weeknd better than me, and I'm not gonna do it better than what it is right now."

The idea first surfaced after a 2022 show at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles where he lost his voice four songs in and had to cut the night short. A doctor found nothing physically wrong. Tesfaye suggested the issue was mental, a signal from somewhere inside him that the chapter might be closing. That moment stuck with him long enough to plant the seed of a public pivot.
